The best Japanese walking apps for iPhone, compared
Five apps on the App Store do the same simple job — time three minutes brisk, three minutes easy, five times. They differ on the things you only notice mid-walk: how the cue reaches you with the phone in your pocket, what happens to your podcast, what's on your lock screen, and whether you're paying weekly for a timer. Here's an honest side-by-side. We make one of them (Aruki), and we say so.
The short version. If you walk with the phone pocketed and a podcast on, the cue has to be spoken audio that ducks your podcast — not a notification you'll miss. That's Aruki (free) or Japanese Walking App (paid Plus). If you want an Apple Watch companion, look at JWT or Japanese Walking App. If you just want a big list of ratings and a colour picker, Japanese Walking Timer has the most reviews.

Facts from each app's US App Store listing on 13 September 2026 — descriptions, in-app purchase lists, version history and reviews. "Not listed" means the listing doesn't claim it, not that it's impossible. 1 The Paceriva developer notes in a review reply that iOS limits background timers, so sounds "don't always work perfectly" and to rely on notifications. 2 The most-liked Paceriva review asks for a Watch app. Prices vary by country.
What actually matters on the walk
The method is timing, so every app can count to three minutes. The separation happens in the pocket. A notification is a buzz you may or may not feel while walking, silenced under a podcast, gone if you glance late. A spoken cue over background audio reaches you regardless — and the polite version ducks whatever you're listening to for two seconds and brings it back, instead of hijacking it. Then there's the lock screen: if the phase and the countdown are on it, you never unlock the phone mid-walk. Finally, the price model: a timer is not a service, so weekly billing for one is worth a raised eyebrow.
The five apps
1. Aruki: Japanese Walking (that's ours)
App StoreBuilt around the pocket problem: a recorded coach voice (not a robot) says "brisk" and "easy" over whatever you're listening to, ducks it, resumes it, and shows the phase and countdown on the lock screen as a Live Activity. The full guided walk, voice included, is free with no account. Pro adds live cadence feedback against your target, a metronome at your pace, custom intervals and sets, full history and share-card themes — for a single $9.99 purchase.
- Spoken cues with the screen off, phone pocketed
- Never cuts your podcast or music
- Lock-screen Live Activity, free
- One-time price, no subscription, no account
- Coach voice recorded in 17 languages
- No Apple Watch app (by design — you don't need one)
- New in 2026, so very few ratings yet
2. Japanese Walking Timer
App StoreThe most-reviewed of the group and the friendliest to older iPhones. It sends a notification with a "zen chime" when it's time to change pace, offers walk reminders, achievements, light/dark mode and colour themes, and keeps all data on the device. Its description suggests repeating the cycle ten times (an hour); the studied protocol is five. No lock-screen timer or Watch support are listed.
- Most ratings; actively updated (Sep 2026)
- Runs on iOS 15+
- Reminders and achievements
- Cues are notifications, easy to miss under audio
- English-first; no lock-screen phase
3. Paceriva – Japanese Walking
App StorePositions the method as a fat-burning workout: calorie estimates, streaks, Apple Health integration and an 11-language interface. The developer is candid in review replies that iOS restricts background timers, so sounds "don't always work perfectly" and notifications are the reliable cue. The top review asks for an Apple Watch app.
- Apple Health integration and calorie tracking
- 11 languages, lifetime option
- Weekly subscription tier
- Notification-reliant cues by the developer's own account
4. JWT – Japanese Walking Timer
App StoreA clean, customisable timer — sets, interval length, even the pace descriptions — with audio cues and an Apple Watch companion. Pro adds Live Activities and lock-screen notifications so the walk continues with the screen locked. English only. One reviewer notes Watch notifications don't fire every time.
- Apple Watch app
- Fully customisable intervals and labels
- Fair one-time Pro price
- Lock-screen timer is paid
- English only; needs iOS 18.4
5. Japanese Walking App
App StoreOne-tap start with voice and haptic coaching and a progress ring. The things that make a walking timer work in the pocket — running with the screen off, ducking under music and podcasts, Apple Watch mirroring, Health sync — are all behind the Plus subscription. Last updated August 2025, more than a year ago at the time of writing.
- Apple Watch mirroring and Health sync (Plus)
- Audio ducking with podcasts (Plus)
- Background operation is paid
- Weekly pricing; lowest rating of the five
- No update in over a year
Don't want an app at all?
Use the free Japanese walking timer in your browser — the same chimes and coach voice as Aruki, no install. It only works with the screen on, which is the one thing an app fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Japanese walking app?
All five are free to download. Aruki's full guided walk with the coach voice is free; the others keep some features behind a subscription or a one-time purchase.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No — the method only needs a timer. Aruki, Japanese Walking Timer and Paceriva run on the iPhone alone; JWT and Japanese Walking App add a Watch companion if you want one.
Which app works with podcasts?
Aruki ducks your podcast or music for the cue and resumes it, free. Japanese Walking App lists audio ducking as a paid Plus feature. Notification-based apps don't play audio over your podcast at all.
Which is cheapest?
Free, if you only need the timer — Aruki includes the guided walk free. Paid tiers, as listed in September 2026: Aruki Pro $9.99 once; JWT Pro $9.99 once or $8.99/yr; Paceriva $19.99 lifetime or $2.99/wk; Japanese Walking App $29.99 lifetime or $4.99/wk.
